Augusta National
A Local’s Love Letter and Where to Go Beyond the Greens
There’s something magical about springtime in the South, especially if you’re lucky enough to call North Augusta home. The azaleas are in full bloom, the air is warm but not stifling, and the hum of excitement builds as the Masters rolls into town. For locals like me, Augusta National isn’t just a golf course—it’s a symbol of pride, tradition, and beauty that feels as much a part of our identity as the Savannah River that separates us from its hallowed grounds.
Growing up here, I never quite realized how special it was to live in the shadow of one of the most famous golf courses in the world. But every April, when visitors flood into town with their wide-eyed wonder and green jackets start appearing like sightings of rare birds, I’m reminded just how lucky we are. And while Augusta National is undoubtedly the crown jewel, there’s so much more to this corner of the South than fairways and pimento cheese sandwiches.
Let me take you on a little tour of my North Augusta—my home—and share a few places you shouldn’t miss while you’re here for the Masters.
The Magic of Augusta National
First, let’s talk about Augusta National. Even if you’ve never set foot on its grounds, you’ve probably seen it on TV: those rolling greens so perfect they look painted on, the kaleidoscope of azaleas and dogwoods framing every shot, and that unmistakable sense of reverence that hangs in the air. It’s not just a golf course; it’s a cathedral to the game.
But what TV doesn’t quite capture is how it feels to walk through those gates for the first time. The grass is greener than you imagined, the flowers more vibrant. Even if you’re not a golfer (or if your swing looks more like mine), there’s something about being there that makes you stand a little straighter. It’s awe-inspiring and humbling all at once.
North Augusta: Across the River, A World Away
While Augusta National gets all the attention during Masters Week, those of us from North Augusta know there’s plenty to love on our side of the river. We’re close enough to feel the energy but far enough to escape it when we need to. Here are some of my favorite spots that capture the soul of this place:
Brick Pond Park: Tucked away near downtown North Augusta, this hidden gem feels like stepping into another world. The wetlands are alive with turtles sunning themselves on logs and herons gliding over still waters. It’s my go-to spot when I need a little peace and quiet.
The Greeneway Trail: This trail winds its way through town like an old friend who knows all your favorite places. Whether you’re walking off too many biscuits or biking with family, it offers stunning views of the Savannah River and shaded stretches perfect for reflection.
Riverside Village: This newer addition to North Augusta has quickly become a local favorite. You can catch an Augusta GreenJackets baseball game at SRP Park (a minor league experience with major league charm) or sip craft beer at one of the nearby spots overlooking the river.
Manuel’s Bread Café: If there’s one place that feels like home to me, it’s Manuel’s. Nestled in Hammond’s Ferry, this French-inspired café serves food so good it’ll make you want to hug your waiter. Their shrimp and grits? Pure heaven.
Augusta Adventures Worth Crossing the Bridge For
Of course, no visit would be complete without venturing into Augusta itself. While everyone else is busy snapping selfies at Amen Corner or hunting for autographs at Berckmans Place, here are a few places where you’ll find me:
The Riverwalk: There’s something timeless about strolling along this stretch of riverfront beauty. Grab an ice cream cone and take your time—you’re on Southern time now.
Augusta Canal: Rent a kayak or hop on one of their guided boat tours to see this historic waterway up close. It’s an underrated treasure that combines history with natural beauty.
Phinizy Swamp Nature Park: Just outside downtown Augusta lies this sprawling nature preserve where cypress trees rise from still waters like something out of a painting. It’s wild and wonderful—a perfect counterbalance to the manicured perfection of Augusta National.
Why I’ll Always Call This Place Home
There’s something about North Augusta and its surroundings that stays with you long after you leave. Maybe it’s the way strangers wave from their porches or how every meal feels like an event worth savoring. Maybe it’s how spring smells sweeter here, with hints of honeysuckle carried on soft breezes.
For me, it’s all those things—and more. It’s knowing that while thousands come here each year chasing golf glory or bucket-list dreams, we get to live this magic every day. So whether you’re here for just one Masters Week or planning your next trip back before you’ve even left, I hope you take time to soak in everything this area has to offer.
Because while Augusta National may be our star attraction, it’s just one part of what makes this place feel like home—and I wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world.
